Embark on a journey through time with the French General fabric designs available at Shabby Fabrics, where the essence of vintage elegance meets contemporary creativity. Two decades ago, French General found its roots in a quaint barn along the Hudson River in upstate New York. This charming space, open monthly, showcased a curated collection of Kaari Meng's cherished treasures—antique French linens, 19th-century floral textiles, ticking fabrics, buttons, beads, and ribbons.
From these humble beginnings, French General evolved into a renowned shop, a dynamic workshop hosting classes in stitching, block printing, and natural dyeing, and a bustling design studio led by Kaari and her husband, JZ. Their fabric design journey with Moda commenced in 2008 with the enchanting Rouenneries collection. Since then, the duo has crafted over 30 collections and 60 quilt patterns, each a harmonious blend of old French florals, petite prints, stripes, and borders.
French General's fabric collections draw inspiration from historical documents but are brought to life in a fresh and contemporary palette. Red, a signature shade, has become synonymous with the French General brand, adding a touch of timeless sophistication to each collection.
Beyond quilt fabric and patterns, French General extends its artistic touch to interior fabrics, wall coverings, jewelry kits, and a captivating array of embroidery samplers and floss palettes.
Kaari Meng, residing in Los Angeles, California, is the creative force behind French General. Her days are dedicated to envisioning innovative ideas for the brand, and she traverses the globe, imparting her passion for vintage fabrics and crafting through workshops and teachings. Explore the timeless allure of French General fabrics, where history and modernity intertwine in every design.
