hi everyone it's Tammy with shabby Fabrics I have a wonderful collection and lots of projects to share with you today this is land that I love by Michael Miller we love this collection we did many projects in it as you can see I am surrounded by them the first thing I have is the Morning Blend table runner this is a June Taylor quilt as you go table runner beautiful for the center of your table it's so bright and cheerful it's perfect for the upcoming holidays for Memorial Day for Fourth of July or if you just love patriotic it's great year round I have a set of napkins that we did and I love this truck print that we have isn't that clever I love that we have a folded star hot pad this is the round version this is a plum easy pattern I love these they're beautiful they make great gifts for someone nice Hostess gifts we also have the square version of this folded star hot pad again these are Plum easy products the other thing we did was the Log Cabin wall hanging this is beautiful this makes a beautiful wall hanging or you can also put this on your table I I have a square table and I like to put mine in the center of my table today I'm going to be making the Casablanca placemats these are also quilt as you go you know I love that kind of thing when you're finished with the project you're really finished with it not sending it out to a quilter all right so let's go ahead and get this workspace cleaned up and we'll get started all right so to start on this project I'm going to take the batting out of the kit and it's all in one giant piece when you get it so we're going to cut it apart we're going to leave a half inch seam allowance all the way around it like we had done on this one all right and I know that there's wrinkles in this batting don't press it sometimes pressing it will cause the batting to shrink or distort so you do not want to do that with these kits all right just kind of relax your batting and just kind of smooth it around it'll be fine all right so let's take a look the next thing we're going to do is we're going to use a basting spray and I haven't done that ahead of time I like to use my base stage spray outside I don't like using that indoors so I just used a basting spray and you can see how it's tacky uh June Taylor has a basting spray or you can just use your favorite one um you're going to cut your Fabrics next and when you cut your before you cut your Fabrics I I recommend using some magic sizing on that magic sizing is going to help your fabric retain the creases that we're going to put into it when we're folding it so remember we're not ironing this project as we go all right magic sizing will help you with that okay so the first thing we do is we take our Center Square and we're going to place it in the center it's marked number one this is so by number these lines that are marked on here are placement lines Not sewing lines so that's very important to remember so we're going to place piece number one and I've cut my pieces ahead of time snout piece number two needs to cover this so we're going to fold this right sides together like this so then when I sew a quarter inch seam away from my placement line when I turn it it will fill that space so this is just a placement line not a sewing line I'm going to sew a quarter inch inside of my placement line all right so I'm going to pin this in place I like to use cool pins for this these are cool pins by the Gypsy quilter I love these pins they're stable pins they're sturdy so they're not going to bend when I'm trying to pin through multiple layers this tip this blue tip also will stay cool for for an iron they will not melt not that I'm going to have an iron here but what I like about them is a sturdiness and how easy they are to grab and use all right so I'm going to place a couple of pins like this I'm going to place one at the end of my seam like this now I want you to note where I place my pins I place my pins well out of my seam allowance all I need to do is hold that fabric on there I don't need to pin this all the way up to the berry Edge that way I can start sewing and sew all the way to the end and not have to stop and remove a pin all right let me talk a little bit about the foot that I'm going to be using this these are Bernina feet because we're using the Bernina b770 on camera today I have two feet for you I have a 50 70 and a 90 70. a 97d is my go-to foot for patchwork anytime I'm doing a quarter inch seam this is my foot that I use I love this foot however when you're sewing something like this and this foot is coming along the edge you have to know where that quarter inch is the 57d foot look at this little arm it has on the side of it and you can kind of move it up and down see that that little fabric guide right there that tells me exactly where my quarter inch is so now when I sew on the edge of this I know that if my fabric is riding right along this little guide it's going to be perfect the 57d is the recommended foot with this machine for this project so let me attach this and I'm going to go Stitch this and when I come back I'm also going to sew my second one on right here and save myself a little bit of time I'm going to go ahead and pin that right now there we go all right I'm on my way to the machine I'll see you there all right here we go so you can see how my foot I have this guide Is Right on the edge of my fabric my pin is out of my way and I can start just a couple of stitches before this and I'm going to end a couple of stitches after here we go okay I have the sewn let's take out our pins now of course the natural thing you want to do is you want to go to the iron and press that that's a No-No here so instead we are going to use a tool that has now completely disappeared off of my table the Clover rolling press where is that thing and normally that would be sitting right here on my table but for some reason it has rolled away oh thank you Mr Hand here it is right here okay so to use this tool you can see this gray ruler in the center of it and it just rolls like this this presses your seam so perfect just like that I love this let's do the other side and I know you can see see how that just stayed right there it's not moving at all it's just staying there let's trim these threads all right and now we are ready to add the other two sides I'm going to go ahead and do that and here we go let's go ahead and pin these with a pin again I'm just going to pin it at the end like this and here in the beginning all right I'm see you with sewing machine I'm going to stitch this exactly like I did before here we go foreign is done check out my pins and again I'm going to use my Clover roll and press here that's beautiful everything just stays exactly where I want it it's in that cool you never know that I did not press that all right so now I'm just going to continue adding rounds all the way out I'm going to do that off camera and when I come back I'm going to have all these rounds on and I'm going to show you how to trim it out and put binding on okay I'll see in a minute [Music] okay I am back and I have got all my pieces sewn down that was very quick all right so now the next thing to do is we're going to trim this up I'm going to use my creative grids two and a half by twenty four and a half inch ruler this is my favorite go-to ruler when I'm cutting yardage when I'm doing anything I'm reaching for this ruler first I love this ruler all right so if you'll notice right here in the corner you can see how they have extended the lines of the placemat that's to help you see that they're extended that is to help you in squaring this up I love that so I'm just going to line this up there we go you're going to want to use a nice sharp blade in here I'd recommend changing your blade this is just an Ulta 45 millimeter we do have the spare blades so if you haven't changed your blade for a while you might want to pick up a spare blade it's amazing what you can do with a fresh blade I cut like I never thought I could with a fresh blade you don't realize when you're cutting you're pushing down fairly hard and if your blade is dull you push even harder and then you put a fresh blade in it's like whoa that's really sharp it's like I've been working way too hard to cut lately so save your wrist put in a new blade okay I've got one more last cut all right perfect the last thing to do is binding so in the pattern it tells you that you can cut your binding to two and a quarter inches I'm kind of old school I always always cut my binding to two and a half so if you buy this kit you will have enough binding to cut your binding strips at two and a half don't feel like you have to follow the pattern at shabby Fabrics we cut our binding at two and a half all right so I have done that ahead of time and I have pieced this together I have a couple of strips here so I'm going to show you how I piece this I piece this just with a straight seam so that when you see it on the front it's virtually invisible as to where my scene is all right but I promise it's there all right so to start with binding let's get this arranged right here okay so we're going to start I'm going to leave a good long tail I'm going to start on one of my long edges I'm going to start sewing about right here I'm going to start I'm going to back tack that I'm going to come up and use a quarter inch stop on my foot now again remember we were talking about these feet there are notches in this foot there are three notches the center Notch is where your needle is the front Notch is a quarter inch in front of your needle the back Notch is a quarter inch behind your needle this foot is invaluable when you're sewing binding and you're coming along here I just watch for this front notch to get even with the front of my placemat and I know to stop and back up and back Tack and I have a perfect quarter inch stop if you do set in seams the split is a must this is the 97d also the 57d also has that I believe there's one other foot called a 37d and that was on my first original Bernina was a 37d it was a patchwork foot as well and that had the notches as well that it's just so nice okay so I'm going to do a quarter inch stop I'm going to miter all the way around and then when I end I'm going to have a long tail as well and I'm going to show you a magic way on how to join your bind date all right so I'll see you back here in a minute foreign foreign foreign okay so I'm back so I have my binding I've left long tails on each side all right I'm going to show you how to join them in the center perfectly all right so let's bring the ironing mat over and turn this around I'm going to need Wonder Clips in a moment here we're going to need a PIN all right so this is a stripe binding and so what I want to do is I want to join this together with seams that are straight I don't want to do an angle doing an angle on a stripe binding if you actually nail that and get it perfectly lined up uh kudos to you I know better than to even try to do that especially on camera so I'm going to show you how I would do this at home and I would do this as a straight binding all right straight C all right here we go so I'm going to line this up fold it back and we're going to do the same on this side just like that now I want these seams be just a fraction away from each other all right like this so you can see the little tiny Gap that I have between these two and I'm going to put my iron down if you have a steam you can use steam oh there was some steam in there okay I'm going to press this out really really well I want those nice those folds nicely creased in there okay all right so the first one I'm going to pick it up I'm going to open my binding and I'm just going to lay it flat okay this one I'm going to pick it up and I need to sew these right sides together right so to sew this right sides together I have to turn my binding like this do you see how I'm putting my tails are going to go together [Music] and now I'm going to fold my placemat so that I can have room to work bottom one's not staying flat there it goes all right so now I have my binding binding I can see where my crease is right here that crease I want to line up with this crease all right we're gonna line that up perfect all right let's put a pin in that right here all right so I'm going to sew on the crease now okay so I'm make sure your tails are together right they're right sides together my tails are together let's just open this carefully and make sure that we didn't take a Twist in our binding all right ah I like that so I'm not pulling this very tight because I just have a pin there I want it to stay but you can see how that biting is going to be perfect if I sew it all right so I'm going to take this to the sewing machine I'm going to sew just in my crease and I'll be right back foreign This Thread here and take out my pin now before I cut that and trim that to a quarter inch let's just make sure that that binding look at that I hit the red stripe it's still a red stripe it's a little bit wider than my other Stripes but I think it's fine all right so I'm going to trim this to a quarter of an inch it fits just perfect you can just use a pair of scissors like this and I'm going to press that seam open okay and then I'm going to press it in half perfect I'm going to go Stitch this down beautiful there we go there's my binding all right so now to finish this project I'm just going to take an iron and I press up into my Corners it helps that miter just know what where I want it to lay and I'm just pressing all along my edges here this this makes your binding nice and crisp all around the edges so it's not it's just makes a nice straight seam there I like that all right we're going to turn this over I'm going to flip my bindings around and get this out of the way like that and now I'm just going to take my Wonder clips I love Wonder Clips these little Clips are amazing they have a flat bottom and a rounded top there is a right side and a wrong side the wrong side is the bottom of them is the flat part all right so the flat part I always machine Stitch my bindings to placement especially something like placemats so when I Stitch this I'm going to have the project on top and this on the bottom so I want the flat part of that Wonder clip on the bottom of this binding like this so now as I clip this along I'm using the Wonder clip to measure exactly how far my binding is coming down you see that let me clip a few more here and you can see my binding will be perfect when I Stitch this on now stitching this at the end I kind of miter my Corners like this put a little clip in there so stitching your binding down I know I used to do a lot of bindings by hand you can still do that the Wonder Clips just help keep that binding there you know exactly where they are you can sit on the couch and do this I like that or you can go sit outside on your front porch with some lemonade that sounds even better I think so where's your favorite place to stitch binding at let us know in the comments below I'd love to see okay so after you get all the way around you can see how perfect your biting is here but it's also perfect on the front all right and I like that so thank you so much for joining me today for this tutorial on the Casablanca placemats this is quilt as you go by June Taylor and the fabric is lamb that I love by Michael Miller I hope you'll join me again on another shabby Fabrics tutorial [Music] thank you
